Hey guys. as I was going to work this mornign i noticed out on someone's front lawn (it was trash day) there was a giant hex tank. So I picked it up.

Anyway, I just wondered if anyone else had interesting stories related to finding a fish tank or getting it free?

My first 2 tanks were free :) In college I worked at a pet store (locally owned, not chain) and people would get fed up after killing their fish because they didn't listen to me about cycling before adding a full tank of fish and they'd offer their tank! My first was a 29 gallon with all the equipment and my second was a 55 gallon.

OMG!!! how do you know it was out for the trash? didnt you ask the householders? It could have been out on the lawn for any number of reasons!

in the UK that is "stealing by finding".
rubish (trash) is still considered someones property untill it's in the dustcart (truck) with everyone elses'.

Personally I would've asked first. :p

thats horrble. What if they were airing it because they just got it and washed it? You should take that back!

so y leave it in the front they would keep it at the back. and its not everyday that u see a tank outside is it

if the tank was there with the rest of the trash, chances are they were throwing it out. although i think i would have asked first. but people here dig through our garbage all the time :dunno:

In the US once you place an item at the designated spot with the 'intention' of discarding it, it becomes fair game. Which is why bumbs and paparazzi can dig through any one's trash at any time. Intent is determined by what a reasonable person would think as they are plcing an object in the specific spot where, again, the reasonable person would expect the garbage company to take an object.

thanks another point of law difference accross the pond :)

If it was with a load of rubbish I'd say it was fair game....did you put it on your back like a carthorse so you could run faster just in case??

Once its at the curb, it's fair game here Canada as well. Its funny on garbage night to see all the people out walking the nieborhood. Some one picked up a broken washing machine from the guy across the street from me, a desk from us, an old couch. It's funny... one mans trash is deffinately another's treasure.
