Looks very stressed But other than that, I'm not sure if it's male or female. There are some extensions on the tail...they could develop making it a definite male.

It'd help if I could see it's anal fin and oviduct (not sure if that's the correct name). I mean the tube just infront of the anal fin.

just been trying to get you another pic curiosity but it wouldnt let me get a good pic but i have had a good look at the area you mentioned and it seems quite large, are these egg layers? if so i would suggest it was a female unless its well hung.....

Yes they are egg layers.

The female has a relatively long and straight oviduct that points to the ground.
The males tapers towards the anal fin so is smaller and slanted.

Also a male's anal fin often passes the junction where the body turns into the tail.
