Hi

Just wondered what the latest thinking was on the best anti virus and firewall software to use (free versions!)

I've been using AVG without issue on my main PC (XP), i was wondering if this is still one of the recommended one's?

For some reason i couldn't get AVG to work on my lab-top (Vista), so i wondered what a good alternative is to AVG? Cheers

As for firewalls, i have just been using Window's Defender, do you think this is sufficient?

Looking for software that won't hog resources (i.e. Norton) and slow my system down, my PC is a Dell with 512MB Ram and my Lap-top is Dell, also with 512MB Ram

EDIT: i do a lot of general surfing on the internet, downloading music, watching films etc so i would like to take steps to ensure i am well protected!

I use avg with no problems.I like it because it updates at 8.am every morning . I use spybot for spyware and adaware for adware and i think my pc still works! Spybot here is free

AVG is may anti-virus, but I think only version 8 is Vista compatible?
Spybot S&D is the anti-spyware
Lavasoft ad-aware is my anti-adaware.

I also use Abexo registory scanner, but don't mess with your registory unless you know what you are doing  You can easily do damage to your software environment and Abexo can be hard on Windows components...

All the best

Great security tip. Use Linux, less security holes, and less popular so less targeted!

Nope, 7.5 works on Vista.

I've been an AVG fan for a while, but I understand 8.0 is more of a system hog and has a few glitches still, so I am refusing to upgrade for now.
