Antivirus And Firewall

kaivalagi:

Cool info cheers man, I got the PC the other day, and it came with Mac Afee, which I dont like much as I have heard its not the best and uses too much processor information? So once the free two month trial is over I'll chuck it and get a different one. I have heard Norton is much the same.

Yeah, McAfee and Symantec/Norton tools are heavy resource hoggers, other tools suggested in this thread are good alternatives

I have MAC Filtering and WEP keys enabled for one

sorry but when i read this i had to laugh give me 10 minutes outside your house and your wep key is mine

WPA2 is the best so far

also to the OP Antivir by avira if your looking for a free AV

ESET NOD is the best IMO. Although I have BitDefender.

I actually only use a Firewall and don't run anti-virus. So long as you don't go to dodgy websites or download/install dodgy apps you've no need to worry! Firewalls are a must though :D and Windows' is useless

As for your network, hiding the SSID is always good practise but the fact that you're still using WEP says a lot. WEP is somewhere near useless since it can be cracked in minutes, in fact in seconds if you really know what you're doing

Confirming that this statement is true, we cracked our neighbours network in 2.6 seconds using a Linux based OS purely designed for networking. We were in dire need of a connection to the outside world whilst we waited for ours to be set up. To also add to the insult that we were "leeching" their network, we found their network didn't span across a greater enough area of our flat for all of us to utilise it so we then used a router setup as a relay and boosted the signal quite a distance. I sometimes couldn't sleep at night... as I was too busy online.

However I never use a firewall, if someone wants to steal my megahertz so be it. I've never had a problem at all, I am rather careful on my movements and the only problem I think we would have is if someone managed to pop onto our network in our flat as we all have our drives shared. I did however use "BlackIce" a good few years ago and found that nice however I also found it extremely over active.

Erm, you still need a firewall to help prevent direct hacking...
