was just thinking, don't know if you guys would have seen but there's quite a suscessful plant swap pinned thread in the planted forum

what does everyone think about doing the same but for frag swaps??

'frag' whaadat den?

frag's of corals... it's like taking a cutting of a plant.

with fast growing coral's you need to do it to stop them taking over the tank, sometimes some will start growing where it's shaded so you need to seperate it and move it so it doesn't die and pollute your tank

it also helps to stop people taking so many corals from the ocean cos you can distribute them around your friends

:good:

i think that would be a great idea, and also maybe if not swap but could buy them from other people especially newbies who wouldnt necessarily have anything to swap :good:

sounds like a great idea to me wiggle! the only problem i foresee is delivery, with tropical plants they can survive for a while "in transit" we dont have that luxury with our corals, any suggestions?

im starting to frag my various leathers this weekend too see how they turn out, so im happy to swap for other stuff :good:

yeah i don't know how you could/should transport corals.... was hoping someone else could help with that!!

and i'd have no objection to offering them for sale for a small price for newbies who've got nothing to swap.

:)

how big roughly is a frag ?

I bought a zoo-thingy the other week and a section peeled away from the rock - I cut it in half and superglued it to a couple of small live rock pieces (3 inch long x 1 inch wide) and they seem to be growing quite happily.

As for delivery - Im sure special delivery in the UK through royal mail (next day before 12pm) would be ok if you posted them at say 4pm the day before ? Keeping the water warm though might be interesting.

dunno i guess you could just state on the post how much of it the other person should expect to receive.

and i know some people send fish with heat packs, presumably the same could work for corals?

idealy you want the coral frag attached to some polostyrene and suspend it upsidedown in a bag of water, then wrap this up in newspaper if its got a heat pack all the better then send it in a polostyrene box! gives it the best chance of survival in shipment!

sounds easy enough... to do that and then go royal mail special delivery (sure there's equivalents in oz and the usa and anywhere else you might happen to hail from) shouldn't be a massive issue for people should it?

what do people reckon, say if your swapping with someone then no money changes hands as you'd have similar expenses for p&p.... but if your selling then just pay a few quid towards p&p.

:good:

iam up for it i have a few bits and bobs to be fragged.
the only question is would u take the coral to your local post office and ask for the next day delivery? or will they pick it up from u?

you package it and take it there then ask them to send it for next day delivery

take it too them!! you have one less link in the chain! one less thing too go wrong! the less hand changes the better at the end of the day!

also mark clearly on the package! LIVE CORAL HANDLE WITH CARE! you know what couriers are like!

i wouldn't be so sure you should do that... i'm not sure if it's legal to send live stuff through the royal mail... might not help to draw they're attention to it

suppliers do it all the time, i get sent crabs and snails and stuff with this plastered all over the boxes! shouldnt be a problem at all they are only using standard couriers, ie parcel force, royal mail, citylink etc :)
