Hi all,
I had wanted to plant some plants in my new tank and I keep reading and hearing that my goldfish (I have 2) will probably destroy them. For those of you who have goldies what plants did you plant? I have been leaning toward Elodea and Cabomba . And I thought I might try tying a java fern to a larg piece of driftwood..
Did any of you try these? Did they do will in your goldfish tank? Thanx so much for you advice..

Hi :)

I have spent the past year trying to plant my goldfish tank which has proven to be a rather expensive nightmare :p but I have finally worked out which ones they don't eat. So far they have left alone:

Elodea/Egeria Densa
Java Fern
Java Moss (although they like to rip it off rock/wood and fling it around so it blocks the filter!)
Hygrophilia Polysperma
Most Crypts (be careful to choose ones suitable for lower temperatures)
Crinium Thanium (although this seems to grow slowly in such cold water)

Mine quickly ate Cabomba, Moss Balls, and all varieties of Vallis including a monstrous Giant Vallis which disappeared almost overnight. Now I just stick to large bunches of Elodea and Hygro which seems to be the safest bet. Hope that helps :good:

Thank you very much for the reply and your experience! I think I will try the Elodea and the Java Fern..

(lol about the java moss. Funny how these lil fish can soo make me think of Jaws.. LOL)

Your fish a beautiful btw! Gorgeous pics..

My tank has been going successfully for 20 years. I find that Elodea is hard to keep planted, but grows happily as a floating plant. Cabomba grows fine, and is mostly left alone. Java moss is also great, and grows so well in cold water that I have to rip out a handful every month. I would also recommend various species of vallis, and common duck weed on the surface. I know that duck weed reproduces like mad, but my goldfish eat it like mad too, so it mostly balances out...

I have tried many different plants and all of them have grown fine in my goldfish tank, in particular vallis grows really well, as do hygro species. I have some riccia floating in the tank now as well which is being left alone.

In the tank at the moment are Cabomba Caroliniana, Java fern, Egeria densa, Hygrophila difformis, Hygrophila polysperma, Hygrophila Siamensis B, Vallisneria, a single crypt, some bacopa monniera, there's probably a few I've missed off as I tend to put the leftovers from the other tanks in the goldfish tank.
