spiny eels in general consist of the mastacembelus and macrognathus species.
they include the tiretrack eel (Mastacembelus armatus), zigzag eel (Mastacembelus circumcinctus), fire eel (Mastacembelus erythrotaenia), siamese spiny eel (Mastacembelus siamensis) and the zebra spiny eel (Mastacembelus zebrinus).

yes the fire eel is under that family.

Here were my Macrognathus pancalus (RIP):

Straydum is right, fire eels are classed as spiny eels.

around 20.0 cm i would say. yeap those are some really nice eels.

This one was imported as a flame eel, the importers at TropicalImports.co.uk could not identify him/her. Very social species, all 3 of mine, play together and "frolic"

Green fire eel? This is what I bought them as, they are fire eels, that I'm certain of, however they have green bands rather then red.

Very nice hooligan!
GobyMaster: The Macrognathus circumcinctus are commonly known as half banded spiny eels, or I think over in the states more people call them zebra spiny eels. Theyre quite distinguishable though, so common names dont really matter much...
TBH, I dont think mine will reach any more than 6" by the way things are looking...Hes just under about 6" now, but doesnt seem to be getting any longer. I might write a fish index profile for them at some point.

i've heard about these new breeds of green fire eels. its said that the absence of the red colour, and in its place green, is due to the less dominant genes in these eels. really really rare i would say. Hooligan you are really lucky to have them. :D

While most of the commonly-kept members of the Family Mastacembelidae are Asian species, there are a couple of genera that are found in Africa (like Aethiomastacembelus and Caecomastacembelus species).

Here is a picture of one of the West African Aethiomastacembelus species that I'm currently keeping:
