Some may have started doing this already.
I run my Diatom filter 24/7 on my 30 gallon and usually after 5 days the powder is all clogged up and I would have to replace the powder. This is the only filter on my 30 gallon but bacteria has grown in the hoses and on the glass and such keeping the ammonia level to a minimum. I will get another filter for the 30 gallon soon I hope.
So I though about using some of the filter fiber which looks like polyester cotton. I shoved some of that INTO the intake adaptor housing so it acts like a pre filter. And only real small particals go into the powder.
I have to take the adaptor off once a day it seem and just flip the filter fiber around or clean the fiber out in a bowl of water and stick it back in. I don't mind doing this if it makes the powder last longer.
This seem to work great. Its only been running for 2 days like this but its staying cleaner then it would usually be in 2 days.
I just though I would share this since it seems to work pretty good. But we will see after 7 days how it really does.
