Before Steve the Betta came along I was feeding my fish a rather boring diet of flakes and Tetra Plecomine tablets. Steve obviously wouldn't have any of this so I found myself starting to feed him a cocktail of various things to keep him happy. At the moment he's going mad on cockles & prawns (anything like that I get fresh from the fishmongers in the morning. I used to get some funny looks asking for 1 prawn there) as the shops down here don't have anything besides tablets & flakes right now (in a week or so my favourite store may have some new frozen & freeze dried stuff in so I can go to them for stuff).

It's no good me buying a Betta mix tablet/flake food of some sort because Steve HAS to be hand-fed otherwise he doesn't notice the food and it's all gone by the time he finds it.

What foods have you experimented with?

Have you tried frozen bloodworm? Most fish love this and there's always a frenzy at feeding time when they have it. (you can get it at most lfs's or petsmart)

I live in the back end of nowhere here, I have quite a few stores here but they only sell flakes & pellets.

The only place they do sell frozen stuff currently has nothing in & are waiting for the order.

I would actually do that, but my freezers are near to bursting as it is :/

I'll just have to wait till the lfs gets stuff in & feed him on his prawns & cockles till then.

I have fed my fish insects such as ants and spiders. I have also fed them freshwater shrimp from the pond in front of my house. They really love those!

mine get flakes, bloodworm, brine shrimp (live and frozen) :)

My fish hate flakes! Or is it me that hates to feed them flakes because it makes a mess in the tank?!?

I think the original intent of this post was to find out what "experimental" food we feed our fish. I stick to food that's designed for fish. Mine get Wardley's slow sinking crumbles, frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia, and mysis shrimp. I see no reason to experiment with other kinds of foods.
:p
