I have a an eheim in the larger tank and have no problems at all but have a superfish filter (Even cheaper than fluval) on the smaller, but have had no problems with either but I was to get another I would go with eheim.

ehime all the way.
fluval are rubbish, whats the point in the new fx5 i will never know. that huge filter and they fill it with a massive sponge and a tiny compartment for proper media. fluval are a waste of time.

As long as it's designed properly sponge is one of the best filter mediums you can get. It has a huge surface area than most ceramic type medias. Some of the most expensive koi filter in the world (and I mean expensive!!!) use sponge as their primary media.

yer5 but why use sponge on such an expencive bit of kit. there are many much better media`s about they could of used.

ide rather have it full of effimech pro, bio balls, jap mat, k1, sintherd glass and so on. spong is primeraly a mechanical filtration to catch crap, it just so happens it can hold bacteria.

im sorry for any spelling mistakes i make, i just carnt spell.

well, if it works, then why not use it? You get both mechanical and bio flitration from a sponge. its liek a 2-4-1 special!

i just feel its a huge waste of space, if it was that good all the expencive filter makers would be useing it on there filters. with the amount of space inside the body of the filter you could have a much better media.

Eheims all the way.
think of it like this
buying a Eheim over a Fluval is like buying a BMW over a Skoda

have you seem todays Skodas.... built by VW.... they are really nice. The top of the range Octavia can give my T-5 a run for its money as well !

On the note of filters, i was actually going to be a 404 at the end of the month. one of my local LFS has them on sale, brand new for 99.99 !!

its still a skoda and that wont impress the girls as much as a VR6 VW golf
:p

Ive had two fluval externals, both have leaked and both have ended their lives smashed to pieces in the back garden, i have 5 eheims all of them work brilliantly and have never given me any problems, make your own judgements.

HERE HERE!!

a man who knows.

I've used both Fluvals and Eheims over ~20 years of fishkeeping, and found both to be decent.

Admittedly, Eheim has a bit more prestige but the prices on Fluvals can't be beat. All the ones I've owned (and continue to use) have worked 100%. I had at least one Eheim that had a chronic noise problem with air bubbles I never could fix, and it was about the most annoying piece of aquarium kit I've owned. Fluvals, on the other hand, have always proved to be silent. The most recent purchase, a Fluval 104, is very easy to open and clean. The idiot-proof design is very nice. Performance seems to be solid, and where it counts -- keeping the water clean -- it's doing the job.

At the end of the day, it's difficult to compare them objectively. Few of us have used enough of them to make a statistically valid sample. Being human, we also tend to defend brands we have -- it's a lot like Apple computer users saying the Mac is best, while PC owners invariably say Windows is better. Rarely, if ever, does either camp test out each in an objective way before pronouncing their opinion.

Cheers,

Neale

I had a Fluval 303 for over 20years running with no problems at all .

I know nothing about eheim.
