I removed the carbon and biomax nodes from my filter as I was treating for whitespot ( I know now that I shouldnt have removed the biomax nodes

After sucessfully treating the whitespot I am now in a quandry as to what to do with regards replacing the carbon and the chalky nodes. I have bought new of both but have not put them back in the filter YET. I have done a water change since the whitespot cleared up and my water parameters tonight are good. 0 Ammonia and 0 Nitrite ( done with api master kit)

I am worried because someone has told me that because I dont have the biomax nodes or carbon back in the filter I am in a sense re-cycling my tank again and that could be very bad for my fish! HELP! Having got my fish through whitespot I would be devastated if I start killing them off just because my filter stuff isnt right. Can anyone advise me what to do? Should I wack the nodes and carbon back in asap? Thanks

carbon doesnt hold very much bacteria anyway. you may have a mini spike, put the ceramics back in (nodes as you call them) and dont put the carbon back in, replace the carbon with fresh ceramic noodles and carry on with the water changes to keep the ammonia and nitrite at 0 on the test kit

You still had the foam insert in your filter, so that is also where most of your beneficial bacteria have colonized as well.

I would put the biomax back in, and continue to monitor your water readings, and do water changes accordingly if there are any ammonia or nitrite spikes.

You can also add the carbon back to clear up any meds that are still in the tank, but you probably need to buy a need carbon pouch, just because your old one in porbably all used up.

And after the 3 days or so, get rid of your carbon pouch and put another pouch of biomax in there, you can even add some filter floss to filter out fine particles. It adds a nice finish to the water.
