I have a 10 gallon reef tank with 10 lbs dead rock and 3 lbs live rock. I'm thinking of getting a Fluval U1 filter because it's small and I heard that they are pretty quiet, but I opened one of these up in one store and all I could see was one sponge filter. (I'm wondering if you can get a carbon filter for this little baby. )

Right now I have a Aqua Clear 20, that makes too much noise --- I heard that some of these take time to break in -- but --- I'm probably going to end up taking it back to the store where I got it.

I've read that some people run tanks without filters ..... I suppose I could buy a powerhead and not worry about having a filter on the tank. I'm told it will be at least 4 weeks before the dead rock will become seeded -- so that is the soonest I will be able to add any fish. I guess I will have baby fish in the tank and return them to the aquarium every four months for a partial credit towards some small fish.

I wouldn't bother with an external or internal filter. They tend to be nitrate factories if the filters become clogged. I have a 65L nano and don't run any filters, only pumps to circulate the water around the live rock.
