I am in the process of upgrading my filter system. I currently use the Fluval 205 on a 130 Ltr saltwater setup.

Tank is coming along nicely and we are looking to perhaps get a larger tank, although not sure what size.

I have been doing alot of research on another external filter, checking the usual names when someone mentioned the Eheim series. I only ask as the FX5 has a superb system of being able to carry out water changes with it in situ, an option that seems brilliant to me.

However, after speaking with my LFS, UV filters were also mentioned, so i will be looking to cut the outlet pipe and simply fit a UV filter that way. This is where the Eheim system was mentioned as it has an in-built UV setup?

I am really swayed towards the FX5, if only for the water change system, but would love to know your thoughts about the Eheim system, which one to get and how it would compare with the FX5.

Thanks in advance.

not ever heard of an Eheim with built in UV. i think tetratec are the most well known manufacturer that makes one. anyway the external units are easy too fit and there are standalone units avaliable for £25 up. like andywg says for water changes with any cannister.

i don't see the point in the water change thing on the FX5 i don't know about you but i like to do a gravel clean at the same time as my water change that would make the FX5 water change thing useless

it all depends on your budget but if you have the money eheim are the best

don't listen to the FX5 fanboys the eheim pro3 is a better filter

I had an Eheim 2260 running on my tank.Holds around 18 litres of media.I also upgraded the pump to a 2262 and it did 3200lph.Should be able to pick up a second hand one for around £100.

i don't know too much about the fx-5 apart from the huge amount of gph it has. i love eheim canisters though. the classic ones work great. the are by far (in my humble opinion) the best canisters you can buy. fluval doesn't really compare in my opinion

i've had both and i like the eheim 2080 model more i've had two now i have one running my new tank easy to set up and clean

but i have had the fx5 but eheim 2080 model for me everyone to there own
