so i have a fluval model 303 i beleive, i would like to use it(i never used it) i have no clue how to put in the filter media because the only filters i have ever used were hang ons, its also missing the tubing but i do have the piece that goes in the tank, any help?

its a canister i consider it to be external

Most canister have the water syphon out of the tank and go to the bottom of the canister, then the water works its way up through the media to the impellor which pushes the water back to the tank. With this in mind you should arrange the media in a way that you have mechanical filtration (i.e. sponges) followed by biological filtration (i.e. bio-balls, noodles etc.). So long as you can get hose the right diameter so it makes a good seal you should be fine to replace the oulet hose. You could probably get the genuine fluval hoses from your LFS but these would be more expensive than from a harware/diy store.

Hope this helps.
