Fluval Edge And Betta

Thats great, I will have a crack at that this weekend.
Thanks for that.
Just a thought but couldnt you put some floating plants around to minimise jump space?

hmm great idea! Any ideas on types of plants, though, and would he just jump through them?

Actually I dont know much about plant types.
Hopefully someone that knows about them will be along soon :)
Sorry I cant be of more help with that.

Its alright :) What do people think of some Azolla caroliniana, Limnobium laevigatum or Salvinia Natans for the top? If I put it on the top of a Fluval Chi, would it solve the problems of him jumping?

I think you're better off with a lid on the tank - plants won't stop him jumping out if he really wants to.

I remember one I had a few years ago spooked at something, swam like a lunatic around the tank and jumped, landing on top of the internal filter. If I hadn't seen him do it he would've been stuck on top of it. Also found one on top of surface plants before.

soybean: really? Wow, didn't think they were that bad tbh lol. Can't really make a lid for the chi, sure some plants wouldn't work at at all?

Personally, I wouldn't keep fish in open topped tank; all fish have the potential to jump; I lost a BN last year during a wc

You really want to risk it?

Like fluttermoth says, ALL fish have the potential to be jumpers. I wouldn't risk a betta in a lidless tank even with a thick surface of plants. And they need open breathing areas.

There are so many more suitable tanks than these fluval ones, please look around a bit more.

hrrm....a little dissapointed there, but at the end of the day, I want my fish to be happy and safe :) If only the Chi had a lid, or you could buy a lid for one..... :(

I've seen plenty of YouTube Vids and read plenty of stuff where Bettas are kept well in Fluval Edges (they're even on the edge-friendly species list too, though I know these can rarely be trusted)...think one would be fine if he managed to find the air space and adapted to it well?

It sounds like you're pretty set on one. If you're looking for a go-ahead nod I'm afraid it won't come from my direction!

The question of whether it will 'learn' the location of an air source is irrelevant really. I think to put a surface breathing fish that dislikes strong currents in an edge is quite poor stocking and unfair on the fish, given that other more suitable options are out there. This is my opinion. But if you really want to do it, it's your choice.

Wasn't aware the filter made such strong currents, though I must admit I was rather set on one, but I won't put my fish through something unnesscesscary (excuse bad spelling - never been my best subject). It just seems there is very little out there on the aquarium market for me. Perhaps it's just that I'm being too picky about what I'm looking for. I doubt there's many white or completely braceless tanks 15L> and <25L. I do wish you could get more colour variations in tanks.....

I'm sure with time and patience you'll find a suitable tank, if it's the style which is so important to you. I know it's hard when you want to get a new fish and get it all set up.

Ah yes of course! My mistake. In which case it's even more important to get it right!

Indeed! :)

Oh and just wondering, when you put sand in an aquarium, do you put it in wet or pour it in dry? ;)
