I notice that the new Fluval U4 can be bought more cheaply than the 4 Plus. Why is this? I see the polyester is attached to a carbon pad which could mean expensive replacements, but I guess you can just use polyester if you wanted to. Why are the old ones still more expensive?

For anyone that has used both what do you think? I have the Fluval 4 Plus and really rate it but I need to get a new filter for my aquarium.

Look forward to hearing your views :)

I guess it depends on where you get it from. At chaterhouse-aquatics they are both £29.

I guess the 4+ has held its price because it has a proven reputation and performs to the same level as the U4 which is relatively new.

Based on fluvals great reputation for building very competent internal filter I'd go for the U4, simply for the extra options regarding the output flow such as the integrated spray bar setting.

And yes you could just replace the poly/carb pads with poly pads alone, the carbs useless anyway unless you have been treating the tank with medications.
