Ok i have the fluval 3+ and just wondering something. On the top where the water is pumped out there is another small valve which can be fastend shut. Just wondering what this does as I have just left it shut as it doesnt seem to actually do anything.

Do you mean the sticky-up yellow bit or the sliding blue bit? The yellow thing is supposedly a clogging indicator (goes down if flow is low, doesn't work terribly well), the blue slidy bit is a flow adjuster.

Oh, actually, do you mean the blue bit attatched by a strip of plastic that you plug into a hole on the output? That's where the venturi attatchment goes (if you're using it), it's meant to increase aeration but isn't massively efficient and makes a lot more noise.

Yes you turn to valve to draw air in as the water passes below the hole and out of the filter. I dont use it as oohfeeshy says-its a bit noisy especially if you have the pump working full power.

Yeah well i thought it was so i could connect one of my ornaments that blows bubbles to it so i connected the tubing from the filter to that but nothing happend so just closed it and left it alone

I have one of these pumps too. As already been said its for aeration of the water as it draws air in from this valve and no out thus it cannot be used for underwater aeration. You can get it to make a lot less noise of you twist the rubber cap ever so slightly until there is some aeration going through.
