I have been given a secondhand old fluval 2 filter. It didn't come with any instructions so I just want to double check that it is ok. When you open it up inside it has a large cylidrical kind of mesh thing. I assume that is for mechanical filtration. But that is all it has inside, it has none of the sponge filters or floss stuff that other people talk about. Is it ok as it is or does it need some additions to work properly??

Thanks

Depends on the tank you will be using it in and that fluval dont make these filters anymore so you may have problems getting parts soon. The old fluvals did not take into consideration carbon and floss media and were just mechanical and biological (if you just rinse the sponge in tank water). Short term, yes it will be fine if you can get the media, long term, no you need to upgrade. The fluval 2+ are the replacements, externals such as fluval 202 or ehiem are MUCH better.

Thanks for the advice, you are a star. I will bear in mind that I will need to upgrade in the future.
