I've got a Fluval Uno 600 tank (16 gallons) with a Fluval 2 Plus filter that came in the package. Last night we had a power cut for about an hour and obviously the filter and heater went off. Once the power came back on, the filter didn't start up, I took it out, took some water out of the tank, took the filter to pieces and cleaned the sponges in the separate water and put it all back together, but the filter still won't start up. Is it knackered or is there anything else I can do to try and get it working? Would I be better off with a different filter - any recommendations?

LFS said that the 2 plus is the minimum for that size tank.

might sound obviouse but have you checked the fuses???

No, I hadn't thought of that. I'm at work now, so will phone OH to tell him to check. I suppose the power cut could have blown the fuse, but it's usually the lights that go when that happens. Thanks for the suggestion.

Yeah could be the fuse or the motor could be jammed. With the power on move the filter in an up and down motion in the water quite fast to see if that kick starts it! Fluval filters are awesome IMO so I wouldn't change!

I had loads of trouble with my Fluval doing that sort of thing - everytime I switched it off it wouldn't start again - sometimes it worked if I hit it or shook it or as timmystood says wiggle it about in the water. In the end it was getting so hard to start (and it was my second fluval filter doing the same thing) that I decided the swearing and shouting everytime I did my tank maintenace was probably bad for my stress levels and bought a tetratec which, whilst being noisier than the fluval, at least reliably works.

Hopefully its just your fuses! Expensive business if you have to keep trying different filters!

I have 2 fluval 2 plus filters which refuse to start whenever they have been switched off. I take the top bit off and run the tap through the outlet pipe and they generally start again then, sometimes with a slow flow to start with.
I actually don't rate fluval at all. I also have 2 fluval external filters, they worked well for about a year but now need constant maintenance to get any flow out of them at all. One of them is just extra filteration on a Juwel tank which has a Juwel filter built in. The other is a real pain though because it is the goldfish filter and I am intending to change it to another make as soon as the money tree blooms. Ditto the fluval plus internals.
Just a thought - is your tank planted? All my tanks are heavily planted and I don't think Fluvals like it.

Thanks. Just spoke to OH, motor was jammed. He's taken it to bits, run it under the tap, jiggled it up and down in a bucket of tank water, given it a good clean and hey presto, it's going again.

Thanks for all your replies.
