When I do my weekly 20% water change, I also replace the fine grade 'polyester' pad (that fits 'between' the two foam pads). Weekly, I also rinse 'one half' of the foam pads in tank water...

My Question: How often should I 'replace' rather than just 'rinse' these foam pads (one half at a time)?

the "foam pads" should be ok for a couple of years, i have used sponge in my filters for longer with no problems.
just watch the sponge for it starting to get brittle and shrinking then it neededs to be replaced, this will take at least over a year of use i would think.

You only need to replace then when they look like they are starting to fall apart or if they are just so dirty rinsing isn't getting it clean enough
