Just bought a Fluval 104 external filter fo my tank (slowly building up to actually getting some water in !!). Ive placed it in a cupboard below and behind the tank itself

In the instructions it says make sure the bottom of the filter is no lower than 1.4m from the top of the tank water level, this bits OK, its only about 1.2m, the problem is that as the filter is off to the side I need a longer run of hose than 1.4m. Whic is the important fdistance ? is it the hose length or the actual distance of the filter from the tank (in a straight line) ?

Hopefully this make sense :/

the height is the important factor, as this determines how much "work" the pump has to do, and therefore how much flow you will get.

i suppose with a really long piece of tubing, there would be some loss of flow, but i wouldn't think it likely in practice.

Many thanks Fraservet, thats just what I wanted to hear. The tubing will only be slightly longer than 1.4 m but I needed confirmation before I cut any more holes in my cupboard!!

Many thanks
