Fluorescent Fish

Not good....atleast they could have made sure they can't reproduce considering the effort they went through to make them glow! Not cost effective though...I think this practice should be banned, it could have major impacts if these fish are released into thier "natural" habitat...

Yes - I think they reproduce just like any Danio. I agree about habitat. I think the states that evaluated the potential danger in the US decided that the North American climate was, in general, too cold to allow for populations to self sustain in the wild. They point to studies that show that Zebra Danios are not able to maintain wild populations in our country, and they have been sold here at stores for 50 years.

Danios normally do well at sub tropical temps and can do fine down to about 15C and evan colder for short periods so i would have still thought there was a chance some could survive.

in the Northern US states it should get a lot colder than that for considerable lengths of time during the winter.

Migration south through the river system should have been considered though. But I'm sure the US government knows what it is doing, just like all the others!

Thank you - I laughed hard at that one!! :D

Ive read that they cannot reproduce at all, cant remember where though some article.

I swear I do not work for any company selling Glofish - you guys/gals keep making me curious with your comments, so I googled it. Glofish appear to be exactly like Zebra Danio in all respects except the one modified gene for coloring. So they can make their own babies. This is from the FAQ:

Do you have to add a fluorescence gene to every fish before it hatches?
No. Today's GloFish® fluorescent fish are bred from the offspring of fluorescent zebrafish that were originally developed several years ago. Each new GloFish® fluorescent fish inherits its unique color directly from its parents, maintains the color throughout its life, and passes the color along to its offspring.

Although an unreliable source this video says they are sterilized but concerns of gene contaminating local populations.

I dont like the idea of this TBH although i own electric blue rams, so am i being a hypocrite?

Electric blue rams are from selective breeding i think so no not really IMO.

I wouldnt have one i think a zebra danio looks alot better than the glo ones and i dont see why you would want one they just dont look right.

That's exactly it, I had breeding danios before and when they get in the mood the male colours really come out, a nice golden colour that you see flashing around the tank

i've read a few articles on glofish. as their created they have copywrite laws against breeding them. to stop this happening they are sterilyzed at birth. some do slip through the net. this one article said that they haven't actually changed anything in the dna that wouldn't already of happened in evolution. they've just jumped a few steps. i personally cant see where this would happen though. i'm still after a pink and orange neon tetra tiger oscar :)

Wow - I had not seen this thread for a year! The glofish threads always contain some differing opinions. Now two new colors have been introduced - purple and blue. But from what I have seen the new colors are much more muted than the original ones that were done.

I wonder are they fertile after genetic modification? I wonder if they breed what the off-spring are like...?
From what ive heard all of them are fertile and the babies will be glofish aswell.

I think there would need to be a LARGE release of GloFish to have even a remote possibility of surviving in the wild. Most of the US's temperatures aren't right, and even if they are, think of how easy a meal these fish would be for other predatory fish. It's the reason you hardly see wild albino animals. They're way too easy to spot for predators and that's why your best chance of seeing albinos are at zoos and aquariums. I don't think we have to worry one bit that GloFish are going to inhabit our waters or any other.

On the note of do I agree with the selling of GloFish....eeehhhhh, it doesn't really bother me TOO much. I don't think we need to go fiddling with nature all that much. I think too many times mankind thinks it knows what's best for our planet and we end up just screwing it up even more. I don't agree with injecting fish of course, but this is just a genetically modified fish that keeps it characteristics from generation to generation without any further interference. I have to say though that I find the plain zebra danio to be one of the most beautiful aquarium fish out there. Definitely one of the most beautiful out of the tropical community fish. I don't really like the look of the GloFish because it looks totally fake to me, but "fake" is objective I guess. One day fish that glow may look totally normal.
