I have an out of use fluval 304 external (the old round thing) if i was to fill this with sand as in a fluidized bed filter, it should work in the same way shouldnt it??? I was gonna get a fluidized bed filter but if this idea works i wont need to.
Sorry whacky, I don't think this would work. The way an external functions it will either suck out all the sand on not get it to move at all. In a sand filter the clean water is pumped into the bottom of the column, down a small tube and into a cone shape to agitate the sand. I've made a couple of fluidized filters myself and although they work very well, the cost of materials nearly made it not worthwhile. Have a look at some mail order firms, you might get a bargain on SeaStorms. Mac.
Ooops sorry Mac. I forgot you were into the FSBF as well. just Pete keeps going on about his like it's a new religion and he wants me to convert. lol
And so you should adeyc lol they are the new religion as far as im concerned they offer unbeatable biological filtration!!!
As for a home made one??why the hell bother they are only the price of a middle of the range external filter so you can run one external and a fsbf and get the best of both worlds
I attempt all sorts of D.I.Y jobs to try to save money (when you have as many tanks as me you've got too) but a fsbf is just not worth the hassle i.m.o
Cost about £30 each to make, and like you pete I think they are the mutts nuts as far as filters go. The only niggle is they are very oxygen hungry. Mac.
