Anyone know if Flourish Excel is a good enough source of carbon to allow more than 2wpg of light? I've read that you shouldn't go over 2wpg without CO2.

I'm currently running 1.7wpg (Life-GloII and Aqua-Glo) in my 35gal, no CO2 tank. I've had a bit of a problem with hair algae and plants not doing too well (related I know). I thought the Excel would help with both problems, and figured I'd up the light a bit if it all works out to further boost the plants.

First off, I would say don`t go beyond 2WPG because the work load will start to become a burden. At 2WPG you will need diffused pressurised CO2, although you may get away with using a few Nutrafin canisters (couldn`t say how many, I don`t use them) provided you manage them properly.

Plants will take Carbon more readily from a diffused gas rather than from the organic Carbon in Excel. At 2WPG your plants will not be able to get the necessary amount of Carbon , their growth will stunt and algae will appear in all its splendour.

Dave.

Ok, ta for that, Dave. :good: DIY CO2 does look very messy and fiddly... might just keep everything as simple as possible for now (until I get bored and decide my credit card needs another workout.... pressureised CO2, eh...?)
