I am just about to get a Juwel Rio 400 second hand to replace my current marine setup.
It is hopefully going to go on the first floor, but I am concerned about whether the floor will be able to support the weight ok.

It will be against an external wall, and will be running across the joists, not parallel.

The house is about 50 years old, and has a basic floor - joists with floor boards on top.

I estimate the total weight will be about 500kg.

Anyone have any advice/experience with this size tank?

My last house in England, (similar vintage), had a floor as you describe. What struck me when I faced this question was the very large cast iron bath in the upstairs bathroom. Empty it must have weighed a lot, filled I hate to imagine.

I built a tubular steel stand for 4 x 1m tanks and a collection of smaller tanks in one of the unused bedrooms. It was against a load bearing wall, and I had spreaders running across the floor joists. Never had any trouble.

apparently bathrooms have extra support built into them when the house is built.

Mine didn't appear to have any differences. The floor was ripped up in every room before I left when the new heating system was installed. All the upstairs floors looked alike, a joist holding the ground floor ceiling up, a similar joist holding up the floor boards, and an arrangement of diagonal bracing between them.

Whatever, I never had any trouble. Get two very fat friends to stand where the tank is going to be and see if they suddenly disappear!
