floating plants?

why do i see some people float plants in their tanks? does it cut down on light and current or something??

Decreases light. I'm going to do it when I get my plants going.

Floating plants also provide hiding places for fry and can help to reduce aggression in top dwelling fish.

My fish, Gourami, Cory and Bettas like floating plants so I have some fake ones stuck to the ceiling of the tanks and additionally my live plants have lily pads and leaves at the surface further breaking the light up so it's not so direct.

It makes the tank look nice too.
