My LFS doesn't have much to offer currently with regard to floating plants and I've started looking at some online sellers. In searching around the internet, a lot of differing, often contradictory info comes up (as per usual), so I'm asking the TTF brain trust: what are some ideal floating plants for angelfish? Something from their natural habitat.

My 75 gallon tank is still cycling but getting close, then two angels plus a possible third will be added.

I would have to do some digging to find possible floating plants that are present in a specific habitat. Most angelfish live in shaded watercourses that do not have aquatic plants per say but do have overhanging or marginal vegetation. We use floating plants to replicate this.

Tropical (sometimes called Amazon) Frogbit (Limnobium laevigatum) is native to South America. Salvinia species are native to neotropical areas; this is a much smaller plant but it goes well with a larger floater like the Frogbit.

Water Sprite, Ceratopteris cornuta, is in my view "the" best floating plant, and it is now said to be found in the Americas though originally it was endemic to the old world, probably originating in Africa and spreading across southern Asia.

There is Pistia stratiotes, common name Water Lettuce. Unknown origin, but likely in the Tethys region which may be considered what today is East Africa, India, Indonesia back when these were connected. Pantropical today, this plant is found world-wide in tropical and subtropical regions.

The three above (not including Salvinia) are more substantial plants, and thus very useful as shade plants, sources of microscopic food, and water quality. Angelfish will love to browse slowly through the dangling roots of these floaters.

Good info, thanks. Any recommendations for reputable sellers? I've used BucePlant a couple of times with good results in terms of the state of the plants upon arrival, but they don't have much to offer in floating plants currently. They do have Water Lettuce, I'll start there then focus on Water Sprite.

Being in Canada, getting plants across the Canada/US border either direction is basically impossible due to disease/quarantine issues (with plants/pathogens, has been like this for years). I would try The Wet Spot in Portland, which has a good reputation for fish, they probably carry plants, and will ship within the continental US.

My Angels love frogbit, red root and salvinia. All are floaters and fairly undemanding (red roots being the "difficult" of the three as they love high light and lots of iron to keep them red, but they get tiny white flowers which are cute.) Frogbit is awesome as the roots can extend down towards the substrate quite a ways and give a jungle appearance. Roots can be trimmed back if that is not your thing. Just be prepared to dispose of them by the buckets, and properly. I have gotten a few of each through a seller on Amazon and on etsy. They arrived in good condition, good packaging, little melting and no snails.
