Have you tried aquarium salt? Try 2 pellets 1x a day. The less he eats the less waste he will create
He will be fine with that amount of food

Have you tried adding salt to the water?
Post #18 tells you about salt.

If salt and clean water isn't fixing the problem then look at a broad spectrum fish medication that treats fin rot.

Thanks everyone for all your support and pointers. We have learnt a LOT about bettas in the past few weeks and hope to be better betta parents in the future.

I am curious @Colin_T mentioned bettas have beards when they mature, was our betta an old fish ? The store that sold him to us said he will live for 5 years.. and was a young one.. How do you tell a young betta from a mature one?

Bettas can be sexually mature at around 3 months of age. The males get the beard when they are over 6 months.
