I have woken up early morning today and I have noticed my little betta doing something near the back wall of his tank. I really haven't been aware that he was flaring!
Now I see him hanging around there and flaring at his own reflection.. So I had a closer look and noticed that his bright background is stuck to the tank's back wall and created a little "mirror" where he sees his own reflection and flares at his own reflection thinking its another betta!
So I removed the old background and added a black background made out of black trash bag.
But how did he say 'thank you'? By flaring! So I removed that background and he's without background now.
For now it seems like he stopped flaring... but still..

I would put the back background back on it. It makes the fish seem more secure and it makes the tank look much better.

Seriously, you need to clam down. I know it’s a normal betta mamma feeling. ;)

I have never been able to use a background on my betta's tank. I've tried those plastic ones with a scene of underwater plants; plain black and plain blue plastic backgrounds; matt black cardboard, all with the same result. Every betta I've ever had is fine when the light is off but as soon as the light turns on whatever the background - including the matt black cardboard - they've all flared at their reflection, constantly. It doesn't make any difference which side of the tank the background is on, they still flared. I have given up trying.

I think I should give up too

I think he's still on to flaring and is still interested in the same place. Great.. Now.. what do I do? I mean, I've tried everything.

Leave him be for now. He's been moved from the environment he was familiar with and now he has to familiarise himself with his new home. Everything is strange to him and he will investigate. If he sees something he's not sure about he'll flare to scare it off, even if it's something that can't be scared off like a piece of decor. Once he gets used to his new home and knows what's part of the scenery, he'll settle. Just make sure there's nothing shiny near the tank that he can see his reflection in.

It varies from betta to betta. Some bettas with lots of heavy fins rest more than others with less full fins simply because it's tiring swimming round with heavy fins.

I did not think about it... My lfs had only bettas with long fins..

My current betta is an ordinary veiltail and his fins and tail are not very full, so he's quite an active betta. But half moons and rosetails, which both have a lot of tail, tend to rest more.

My betta has full fins so his often rest makes sense then. How your betta looks?

I'll have to try and take a new photo of him. This was when I first got him, it's blurry because he wouldn't keep still. There's more grey on his body now he's older.
