Flaring

Hmm... well I guess just try to work him up. Maybe turn it on for 20 minutes the first day, then 30 the next and so on. Maybe this will get him used to his reflection without working him up too much. Try that and see if it helps.

Why do you leave the light on at night? Shoot me if I'm being silly, but doesn't that defeat the purpose of nighttime?

No, you dont leave it on at night, you turn it on in the evening when it starts to get dark and turn it off when you go to bed.

Honestly guys flaring is nothing.trained bettas can fight for up to 2 hrs and still be ok afterwards and your worried about a little muscle flexing.these fish love acting tough even if it is at themselves lol.just let em go,theyre just doing what comes naturally and they belive they are defending their territory which makes them feel great cause the reflection always runs away in the end.its only a good thing.
as far as over doing it i dont even see how thats possible, not with pk's anyway, however you should limit the amount of time they get to see another fish and flare just to keep them interested.take it away while they are still keen, not wait until theyre bored with it already.

I can barely get my Eddie to flare. He'll patrol his tank, and attack me when I feed him, but he never gets overly excited. He'll look at a mirror, and tries to get through to it, but he doesn't flare at it.

Flaring is good for developing finnage, and keeping the rays strong afterwards. However, a Long Finned betta can blow their finnage if they flare too much. The caudal can split between the rays. There are some males that tend to chew their own finnage when they flare for too long of a time. If the reflection is so clear they want to flare, you can put a background on the tank. You might try changing the light, or putting a reflector of some kind on it to change the angle of the light, or to dim it a bit. Having a male with enough energy to want to flare a lot is a good thing. It means he is healthy. I'd suggest you fix things so he flares when you want him too, and not all the time.
