I have recently got a red and blue crown tail, and he is in a 55L tank with 5 carianal tetras.
The fighter is constantly flaring, and i'm worried he might be ill. I have only just had a light put in, so it might be because of his reflection.
Any ideas will be appreciated x

it could be because of his reflection. one of my males was obsessed with himself for a while when he would see his reflection, got over it after a while, still does it from time to time tho. i don't think there's anything to worry about with flaring.

If anything (especially from the looks of that picture), your betta seems very healthy. I would say you should have more concern if the fish doesn't flare. Keep in mind, some bettas are feistier than others and will do some odd things

For instance, I had a betta that would flare at me every time I came up to the tank and especially if i reached for the food..... just a funny quirk he had. =p

Flaring isn't a sign of illness but he may not like the tetras. some don't like tank mates, one of mine doesnt. Just keep eye that he doesn't attack them. good luck :good:

 I have two bettas. One is laid back and very rarely flares at anything, and when he does flare it is just a quick flash. The other one flares at anything. Me, pens , soda cans, his food, bubbles in the tank , and anything that comes near his tank. Go figure. Each betta has his or her own personality. Some flare some don't. When they do it can be kind of funny.
