I have a juwel 70 litre tank with a single tube light. The tube has been installed for around 3 months and it seems to be flakey. First i thought it was just scale on it, however it seems the white outer coating is flakey.

Any ideas?

Cheers!

The tubes do not have an outer coating, they are glass. It sounds like your water is settling on the tube then evaporating and leaving a residue.

Thanks for the reply!

I have the water level just below the max. Would the flakes harm the fish at all?

It is just water scale. Take the tube out & give it a wipe with a cloth. If that doesnt shift it then very gently use a bathrooom or kitchen scourer, make sure it isnt an antibacterial one. After cleaning give it a good dry with a towel & leave it for an hour before putting back in. You will notice an increase in light output straight away.

Instead of using something as harsh as that you can also try using white wine vinegar, or window cleaner on it. Just make sure you keep it away from the tank whilst you are doing so :)
