fishless cycle

When i did mine, i didnt add anything, i just slowly started putting the water in, like 20% (leave for hour) etc, but that was because i wasnt sure if the cabinet would take the weight, once i knew it was ok i just filled it up, and ran the filter and air pumps for about 2 days, got it checked by my lfs and they said its perfect, so i planted it out and got some hardy fish for the tank.

All seems to be going strong and the, nitrite levels are fine and stuff.

Add enough ammonia initially to reach a reading of 5ppm. Then note that amount and add it every day until you see nitrites. (You may wish to add a little fish food once a week or so, so that the organic conversion bacteria also establishes.) Once you see nitrites, half your daily dose and add that every day until both ammonia and nitrite are zero. Then do a large water change to get the nitrates down to something reasonable (i shoot for under 20ppm) and then you can get your fish.

What does this have to do with amount of ammonia?
