Added some more water to tank, water level was getting a little low

By day 17 my nitrites were so high they were off the scale, although the API test kit I use gave a false reading after five minutes. I thought my nitrites were low too until I picked up what was going on; the test solution turned purple as soon as it hit the bottom of the test tube, indicating very high reading. After waiting five mins it had faded and looked low, but not totally in keeping with the colour chart.

It may be you are experiencing a similar thing, and that your nitrites may be off the scale and higher than you think.

I'm very new to all this, but that is certainly what I experienced a few weeks ago. Nitrites are now much, much lower.

Paul.

What Paul says is true.. does happen to people. Or in your case it could be that the nitrite spike is just not taking off yet, the timelines for individuals vary widely.

~~waterdrop~~

Well i checked to day after reading this and something really wierd happened. My test isnt API brand but i added the nitrite drops as usual and it did turned deep purple straight away, then i shook it to see if it would go the light blue it usually goes to signal 0ppm but i left it for 5 mins and it went light green!!! This hasnt before but i'm think 'Pacman' maybe right, coz green isnt on the chart lol

So anyway if this is true i have no idea how long this has been going on :/

For me, the nitrites were off the scale high for about ten days, finally dropping back onto the scale on day 25 when the reading was 5.0

My tank is a similar size to yours at 20g, but as WD said everyones cycle is unique.

But it will get there in the end :good:

All the best.

Paul.

Should i do a water change? Or should i leave it since its still processing (slowly)

It looks to me like its time for another water change. The pH does indicate that you may be starting to see some nitrates produced but that won't really matter until you can measure the nitrite.

ok then will carry out a water change to today and dose with ammonia. havent bothered to test any results today. :)

Have had a little re-scape too ;)
