HAPPENED TO ME TOOYou are right about naming them. Before i was in to cichlids i used to keep bettas. Everytime i name them they pass away. Since then i never have. You just dont want to jinx it you know.

Ok you guys are all starting to stress me out. I just fill a new tank and use it, after a good cleaning, I name most of my fish, I don't name the dither fish. I make sure all water and air systems are running smoothly to ensure no gotchas. My biggest concern is when I go to something new. If I have any superstition it is that new fish and plants are the cause of all issues. They introduce disease and other changes typically brings situations where I have to start a new tank because one fish is not getting along with another now, or the conditions are not quite right for the new fish.I fill them with water and let them sit for a full week and feel all the seams for leaks
Tend to agree with the statement above. Three of my tanks are in our main kitchen/living area, these get all the care and attention and are under constant watch. After a while the fish seem to watch you as much you watch them, the cichlids do at least.Fish keeping is a fluid thing, every day something will change in your tank, it is your ability and the way you react to those changes that shows your understanding of this hobby
I love to watch my tanks. I find though that if I am too intent or draw to much attention to myself, the fish watch me back. Especially the Cichlids. The tetras, barbs, cories and other little fish usually get bored of me after a few minutes once they realize I am not feeding them. The Cichlids though, they watch me back, for as long as they see me there. I am like just go about your business guys, they are like "MOM! WHAT YOU DOIN'". I have to try to be sneaky if I want to watch my Cichlids be Cichlids. I have a chair beside each tank except for the corner tank in the Boys room. I just sit in their bean bag when in there. When my family can't find me, they go where the tanks are.Not to cast aspersions but I wonder how many people really do just sit and watch the fish. Really watch, for at least a half hour at a time. Every so often you will see something that blows your mind. Fish are cool !
