Not really sure how to proceed here.

I had a fish doing barrel rolls which I thought was a swim bladder issue. It may well be some sort of parasite after all.

I have several fish flashing their heads against wood and grass. I see no sign whatsoever of white spots on their bodies / fins etc. There are some white dots floating around in the water. I assumed that this was bits of this horrible white algae that collects on the rubber filter inlet from the external filter. That may or may not be the case still, I don't know. The fish tend to go to eat these white blobs them spit them out. The blobs do not move or swim around.

So, of a total of 21 fish, I'd say about 5 of them are flashing. One in particular is doing it a lot. He has a narrowed tail fin, as does another that looks less than pleased. Other than the flashing, they're swimming around fine and haven't lost their appetite. The one that was doing barrel rolls previously doesn't actually seem to flash in that rapid way and I haven't even seen her do a barrel roll since the first day so that may be unrelated.

Anyway, I have added a crushed garlic clove. They sort of nibbled it a bit but not much so I've got quite a bit of garlic everywhere. I did a 15% water change yesterday and a 10% today to help improve water conditions. I had a fry box in the corner of the tank and was adding liquifry and fry food in there, so that may have polluted the water. I have removed and cleaned that breeding box.

In the tank there are
6 forktail rainbowfish (2 or 3 flashing?)
7 celestial pearl danios (none flashing that I can see. I added them 2 and 3 days ago in two groups).
8 spotted blue eyes (2 or 3 flashing)
3 cherry red shrimp. I haven't seen one for a while. The other two have popped out every now and again and seem OK, though they don't seem particularly busy.
1 Zebra Nerrite Snail

In general the tank seem fairly agitated. I had put this down to adding the CPDs in the last couple of days but some sort of parasites or poor water quality seems just as likely.

Parameters are
0ish ammonia (I can never tell on the API master, which always seems to look like a very slight trace no matter what) so I bought a Seachem Ammonia Alert and that says it's all fine).
0 nitrite
5ish nitrate, though it comes out the tap at 20. I have plants that use it up.

I have King British White Spot and King British Revitalising Tonic (sounds like a shampoo), in the cupboard.
I have a 20l tank arriving tomorrow that I was going to use for fry but can be a quarantine tank. Presumably meds would kill the (very small) fry, which are about 6mm.

So the question is, what should I do now?

Thanks!

White spot is not visible in the water column, only when attached to fish.
Are you sure the flashing is not being brought on by an irritant in the water? It is not just a sign of ich but more a sign of general irritation.

I don't know; this is my first tank and we're about a month in. What other irritants could there be?

I wasn't necessarily intimating it was ich, rather I thought it was likely to be a gill parasite but was just hoping to get a rundown of what people would do in my situation.

NB. I fishless cycled, then added the forktails, then the blue eyes, then shrimp & snail, then CPDs, over the course of that monthish

I recently solved my fish flashing by switching food. Does sound suspicious the floating bits and quite possible they are causing irritation.

I just went to a LFS and they said it was probably gill flukes and gave me Interpet Anti Crustacean Parasite. Now... Anti Crustacean does not sound particularly clever when I have shrimp and snails... Any thoughts / experience?

Any more help would be much appreciated. I've done pretty much all I can without starting some meds. I dosed with Seachem Prime, then did another 20% water change with gravel vac. They're still doing flashing. Some are also just hovering just above the gravel / hiding. Still no sign of any white dots.

So, if this was you guys, what would you be doing?

Do you have anywhere you can move your shrimp and snails to temporarily? Or a quarantine tank for your sick fish?

I just got a tank delivered today (a 20l for this purpose). So it's not mature but it's a tank none the less.

I recently had fish with very similar symptoms after adding new fish and also suspected gill flukes, although I couldn't confirm this. As a shot in the dark I dosed Panacur (flubendazole), which is a broad spectrum anti helminthic worming drug - often used to remove hydra and planaria and all I had on hand. It seemed to do the trick, all symptoms ceased after a couple of days, and it's shrimp and snail safe in the quantities used.

Worth a shot if you don't want to risk your shrimp.

Thanks for the tip. Is this the stuff you're on about (for horses?) https://www.google.c...tNqT14QS434DACA

Is there an equivalent that's a bit more fish specific?

BTW, here are a couple of vids of my fish

- general shot. Most of these fish will have flashed at some point. Not all the CPDs have, but the massive one, who's slightly concave has once that I've noticed.
- some fluff, or some sort of white dot, hanging on the end of a thread out one fish's backside. I assumed this was stray fluff that got into the aquarium, that the fish had swallowed... there are a few bits of fluff and polyfilter media in there occasionally that I can't manage to catch.

If you view on youtube you can turn up the quality to 1080p.

The vids seem to be private so I can't view them. I use the 10% oral suspension cat/dog Panacur version because its easy to dose - I use 1ml per 50 litres.

You can get it a bit cheaper as tablets/paste though, but I'd be a bit unsure about choosing dosages. Maybe see what your local pet shop has available?

Even if you click the youtube link you can't see it? OK I've changed them to unlisted rather than private.
