how about a little chat on fish ages i know u cant give a definite age for fish as some live longer than others of the same species.
I lost 5 platys this week and i put it down to the 25% water change & the difference in the temprature change though it never bothered them before with a 15% water change, anyhow what i;m saying is that some of the fish could have been old as i do not know how long they live for ,cos when u go to lfs u dont know how old they are unless u buy baby ones.So u people out there could tell us how long u had certain types of fish & it might help people to decide what to buy when they go to lfs if they know how long they could possibly live for.OK THANKS FOR ANY REPLIES.

I think platys live up to 2 to 3 years if you are lucky.

Well guppies, mollies, platies, swordtails, most danios and bettas live about 2-3 years.

Most gouramies can live up to 7-8 years, sometimes more. However, fragile species or sickly species like dwarfs rarely get much older than 3 years.

Most cichlids and 'sharks' live for several years. Some live longer than a dog...

Corydoras and other catfish are normaly long-lived - at least 8 years is common. Unfortunately there aren't many records so I don't know how accurate this estimation realy is.

Goldfish should live to be over 30! 20 is common... unfortunately most don't make it past their first few weeks/months :(

Osphronemus goramys can reach 60 years of age but are too big for most tanks.

Koi have been said to live to be over 100 (even 250 years has been claimed)! However, the accuracy of this is questionable as they are pond fish and ponds can be passed down from generation to generation or owner to owner etc. and the exact age of the fish is often lost.

Tetras, barbs and rasboras have varying ages but I have heard of very long-lived individuals :)

P.S. - Wilder beat me to the platies :p

As far as corydoras go, I have one female bronze cory who is 11 years old. She's beginning to look a bit "worn", but is still one of the most active of the school, so I hope to have her around for several more years. :)

I have heard of a few kuhli loaches reaching and exceeding 20 years! Most of them reach 10-15 years though. Several larger loaches, such as the clown loach, can also reach 20 years.

kissing gouramis can live to be around30 if kept right

The larger the fish is the longer they last, usually. I have a black skirt tetra and it's going on 7 years now- no jokes.

I've heard that too, my two fancy goldfish will live forever then, as they are massive.
