Don't put them out of their misery yet! It's called Hole In The Head(even though it's not always in the head  ). A dose of antibacterial treatment(MelaFix) should patch it up. It is usually not contagious but can be later on, so I would seperate them.

rarefish

I will also recommend melafix. Melafix is an external bacterial and infection treatment. I use it any time a fish has torn fins, raw skin, missing scale, or like in your case, open sores. It also wont hurt to add a water conditioner with aloe very in it. It will also help to speed up the healing process.

Plysha - have you started adding water conditioner when you do your water changes, or purchased the testing kits for Ammonia/Nitites? It is crucial that you add water conditioner to neutralize the chlorine and chloromines - the constant exposure to these chemicals your fish are undergoing will take/is taking an effect on the immune systems of your fish, making them much more susceptable to disease.

Try melafix, but it looks exactly like my(or what was) guppies syptoms. I'll try to get pictures of them to prove it to you. It looks to me like ulceration to the skin, which becomes a open sore. Sometimes at this point the scales raise, but most often it's too late.

YEP that happened to my preggo gup and if you take an ariel view you can see that the part where its red, it seems like the flesh is rotting away *shivers*

snowyangel I'm sorry I didn't mean to seem like I didn't believe you... I do .....

There is a hole starting in the head and I have had Melafix in the tank for 5 days now....I've tested the water with the nitrite kit and its been at 0 for the last week
(both tanks)they don't sell the Ammonia and Nitrite kit together here was one $10.00 and the other was $6.00 with everything else I had to get I didn't have enough money to get everything.... but i'm working on getting the Ammonia kit within this next week...

(my babies came up with finrot so I started them on melafix and they are all doing great now)
Yes I did get the water conditioner and put that in both tanks.......
I'm treating the male I have with the female in my one 10g tank he has FinRot but its almost gone....

the melafix doesn't seem to be doing a thing with the hole in her side, her whole tail and side are Red and little tummy is really big.. I don't know how much longer she will make it, she has a egg stuck in her back end and I tried to help but it just made her tail close up more........ the tail is starting to turn a little black and go hard....
It really does look like her flesh is rotting away,... it ate more of her body away in just 8 hours......I don't know what else to do for her......

I'll ask this question lol how many times do you put salt in the tank and do you have to do water changes everytime adding new salt?????

I don't think she's getting any better, but the males doing great.. a week ago today when i got him he had a thing starting on his side and when I started treating with melafix it went away and hasn't come back yet.....

If she dies should I take the male out and clean the tank really really good before putting him back in ????? I have to clean the tank in two days any ways.....

Hope I answerd everyone if I didn't say so please and I will get back to you.....

Thanks alot everyone

Theres nothing I can do for this fish but put her out I wouldn't want to be alive knowing my body was being eaten by itsself everyday a little more of me was gone.......

now the question is I have one more day of melafix and the male still needs to be treated should I just clean the tank out all the way put the male back in and keep treating for another week till its all the way gone???.... please someone let me know what to do I don't want to leave my male fish in a dirty tank.....

*Cries* :-( :byebye:
My husband just flushed her down the toilet......

Thanks
Erin

sry phlysa, if ur gunna b cleaning it out anyway go ahead and do it, but if its jus because of the rot then u can just keep up the treatment for a couple more days. u may also want to take out haf the water and replace it each day of treatment b4 adding mor chems.

ok
its starting to get a bit cloudy ...lol....

I was just asking if I should clean it out because of the female fish someone told me to remove my male from the tank so he wouldn't get it
thats way I asked....
Thanks
Erin

So sad to hear of what happened to your fish.....

re: flushing down the toilet.

I've heard 2 things that I like to adhere to regarding waste disposal.

Number 1: The drain is just for rain.

Number 2: the potty is just for pee and poo.

I don't know where the effluent from sewerage goes from where you live, but from where I am, it eventually makes it's way back to the ocean. I love the sea and don't appreciate going to the beach and swimming next to things people flush down their toilets or wash down the stormwater drain.

hope ur husband doesn't use your toilet as a garbage disposal unit all the time

also, don't know what the probability is of re-introducing the bacteria in the fish corpse that your husband flushed down the toilet (not much I don't think with it being such a small fish)...but still, if every person with a guppy that had HIH tossed their fish into the toilet....there'd be a problem

What could be worse than poo? Lol You're ok swimming next to water that had poo in it, but not dead fish? I hate to tell you, but there are lots of fish that die in the ocean, hehe. Anyway, just trying to be funny...seriously though, all water from toilets go through a sewage treatment plant before it's "disposed" of in whatever manner the city uses (back in ocean or watering city plants along the freeway, etc.).

ok, this is fish forum, where we talk about fish not sewer systems. get off her case about it, sewer pipes dont lead to the ocean jerk. the sewage is treated and then the clean water is put back into the ocean (u wont find her dead fish on the beach)
