I introduced my first ever fish to my 30 litre aquarium on Sunday - one zebra danio and one leopard danio. They seem pretty happy, very active and feisty! The plan is to get a couple more fish in about a fortnight as the aquarium settles down and keep stocking fish slowly (checking water etc as we go along). We did a quick fishless cycle before introducing the danios, so they should be OK.
Anyway, the leopard danio disappeared overnight and after some careful looking was found lodged between the tank and the filter. How did he get there!? I pulled the filter out slightly and he untangled himself, but he now has what looks like a bruise on his underside (between anal fin and pelvic fin). It's very red, looks sore and seems to be under his skin. I've been observing him all morning (with light turned out to reduce stress) and he seems to be swimming around happily, acting as normal. He even ate his breakfast!
So... here are the questions:
1) Should I leave him be for now and see if he recovers on his own or put some Stress Coat in to help him heal?
2) There's minimal decor in the tank, do you think he's looking for a hiding place? Is it OK to add live plants at this stage? What about other decor? I don't want to disturb the fish too much by sticking more in too soon.
3) How do I avoid a similar incident in future? I don't think my fish will have learned his lesson, so how do I stop him from squeezing behind the filter?
Hope you can help!
