Hi,
In one of my tanks i put in some local rock, its a beautiful stone that resembles rugged mountain peaks in the aquarium but i also used it because it was free, similar rocks in this quantity on-line would cost upwards of 50 quid so i would like to fix this problem if possible. Since adding the rocks the fish have gone really pale, sometimes they colour up a little bit but then they soon go back to been very pale, other than the colour they seem in good health, breeding, eating well, looking lively and alert etc. I took the stone out 4 weeks ago but the fish are still pale, this made me wonder if it was indeed the rocks that caused this so i set up a experiment tank, i filled it with this rock and put in 2 pale fish from the original tank and 2 healthy looking fish (same species and similar size) from a different tank, the 2 healthy fish have gone pale so it's now clear that the stone is doing this.
The stone is limestone based, reasonably brittle and has some traces of moss left in the crevices as it was impossible to get it off, the rocks were thoroughly cleaned and then sterilised before use. Before i used it i did a lot of research and i came to the conclusion that limestone rock is fine in aquariums but to be wary or KH and therefore PH increase but this is only a concern when there are small and irregular water changes, i change 50% a week, there was no noticeable change despite testing twice daily.
I've been baffled with this for a long time and i don't expect the answer to be a simple one so if anyone has any bright ideas then i would love to know.
Many Thanks,
Jonny.
