Fish Tank Worries

All fish seem to love fry ( as sick as that sounds) and they will all take part in scavenging a dead fish.

You need to get the nitrite kit and a nitrate kit as there is absolutely no way of telling what these levels are at other than to measure them. Fish will often seem fine and then all of a sudden you will start to see groups of fish dieing. This is due to the long term effect of these chemicals.

UGFs are less popular now but they are good filters. They are just more of a pain to clean. I would leave the UGF in the tank until you do a major clean up of the tank somewhere down the road. At that point remove the UGF.

Running both filters is fine and can only help things right now.

You can aim the flow of the filter where ever you think is best for your tank. Aiming it lengthwise will create a strong current in the tank. Where aiming it widthwise wil create a current in one area of the tank. I have even aimed the output directly at the wall next to the filter. This creates a more gentle current that loops around the tank.
Sorry for the length but i wanted to try and answer most of your concerns. :)

EDit: keep up on your water changes to ensure the levels stay low.

Thanks Tstenback

:) Good news. The fry came back from the dead!! Today I counted eight, christ knows where that fishy was hiding.

I have also noticed that algae is starting to build up now. Do you think it is safe to add an algae eater? Or should I clean the glass manually?

Do Corydoras eat algae or are they just bottom feeders?
What is the smallest algae eater?

BTW, I will get a nitrite kit.

Thanks

I think corys are just bottom feeders and basically turn over the gravel/ sand munching on the debris.

As for algae cleaners - I bought a couple of Otos after some advice from people on the forum and they are great little fish. They only grow to about 5cm long so are prob the smallest around. They should be kept in at least a pair...
