Hi

Just wanted to ask a semi-hypothetical question, to see if anyone has tried something similiar before I do it!

Basically I live in a 3 floor town house with the living room etc on the 2nd floor, I want to upgrade my tank to 300l+ so I can safely keep a few clown loaches without having to upgrade again and I don't trust my floor to support it.

My garage is directly underneath my house and has a solid concrete floor so weight wouldn't be an issue (woo) however, one reservation I'm having is that my garage is pretty drafty and I'm guessing would get pretty damn cold in the winter.

Obviously the water wouldn't freeze anyway because he filter keeps it flowing but would a tropical tank be able to withstand prolonged exposure to cold temperatures and would there be any adverse effects to the fish (assuming I invested in a good set of heaters for the tank)?

Thanks!

i did that in england (well it was more of a wooden shed than a garage)
was perfectly fine until it collapsed! as long as the heaters are good it shouldnt be a problem (is the glass thick? you dont want it cracking with having warm water inside and ice cold outside)

Nice one, I'm planning on getting a decent tank so hopefully it will have nice thick glass to withstand a Yorkshire winter!

you could also insulate the garage.
its relativly cheap, and has the added bonus of helping to stop your car rusting and will cut down on energy bills and looks good on a HIP

I've had three tanks in the garage for the last four years and i'm not far from you. the back door to garage left open a lot of the time as well for the dog and I've never had problems only that my lecky bill will be highter

Loads of fishkeepers use garages or sheds as fish houses - I've met at least 2 of them off here.

Will be fine. As stated, if its practical to insulate then it may save you on the electric - in fact I've heard of people who have properly insulated fish houses using heating the air in the room instead.
