Fish Tank Heaviness

Great topic!
We're trying to purchase a home that's on a slab.... so does that mean we could get a nice big aquarium and not have to worry about its weight?

as has been mentioned far more eloquently than i will attempt, it is how the weight is distributed (wherever it is located) if you think you are going to have problems, you can get "spreader boards" to cover extra joists (the name will change depending on location - but basically weight distributors) we used several of these to locate a LARGE old safe onto the top floor of an old building - and no, i wasn't sitting on the floor below it - just in case!

a decent square of 5mm steel would probably suffice, but you'll need to watch out for the sharp edge so you don't slice your toe open when you forget about it.

alternatively, make it a feature and have a curvy pattern - depends if you have fabricators locally.

MW should be able to ask the struct eng's at her place to ask what area is required to spread the load of the 100g tank - and i bet they'll start arguing amongst themselves...being an elec eng myself :- )

lol your a braver man than me if you'll start that fight. we actually also do M&E engineering as well..... i sit with the M&E lads :D

I like engineers

LOL

I wish i could get back to engineering - just for dealing with logical people...but the pay is lousy, so i'll suffer being surrounded by marketing and accounting types :)

A slab is about as safe as it gets for tanks. All the tanks in my profile except the 65, 72, and one of the 150's are in the basement, which is a slab, in a room that roughs out to 8'x16'. Ballpark 1,000 gallons, or around 8,300 pounds.

That's awesome to hear then :)
I don't think we'll be getting a big tank any time soon, but it's good to know that we can & not have problems whenever we do decide to get one :D
