Hi,

I am trying to purchase a 6 month old used tank for spare parts but the guy wants 70 for it. Its a hagen tank not sure of the brand of filter heater gravel and ornaments that come with it but it also comes with a incandecent light system and a wooden frame.
What do you guys think?

70 what? dinars? cents? euros? pounds? metalicos? 70 what????

sorry for not specifying, its 70 canadian dollars
and its a 10 gallon tank

Imo too pricy, but if it comes as a complete set up ie heater lights etc then its a good deal.

6 month old 10 G tank for sale. Complete with filter,
heater, lighting, stand, rocks and with or without as many
black convict fry as you want (35 fry total)

thats the ad, and its a hagen tank, really all I know,, but its a nice wooden stand too, any more opinions? Its close but i want to make sure im not getting ripped off! thanks!

With all that is on offer I'd jump at it, hagen are a good make and their aftersales service is first class! Also get all the fry and sell them on to a lfs and makes some cash back :shifty:

Still sounds a lot to me for such a small tank with incandescent lighting. I agree, Hagen is a reputable make, and freely admit I know nothing about the pricing in Canada, but I'd of thought you'd have been able to do better from the local newspaper ads, eBay or similar.

Ask a Canadian!

Hi _]im

It sounds expensive to me. I just checked and $70 Canadian comes out to about #55.50 US. I can get a new 10 gallon starter kit which includes incandescent lights, an air pump and box filter, gravel, and a few other odds and ends for less than $30. For $55 I could get new everything (except the stand) in a better quality.

The unknown factor with this deal is the stand. If you need it and if it's very nice, it might make a difference.

When buying used equipment I never count the heater because it is fragile and there is a good chance it might not work. A new 10 gallon tank costs me $8 and is the cheapest part of a set up. If the gravel is anything but natural rock I wouldn't count that either, (used gravel is a pain to clean) and if the decorations are anything I might not use, I wouldn't add them to the value of the set up either.

Why not call around to your lfs and see what the lights and filter cost new and consider that the most important part of the deal. Add what you think the stand is worth to you, and the cost of a new 10 gallon tank, and see how it looks to you then. If it's still a bargain, go for it. If not, watch yard sales and the like and you might do better.

I got a 29g high (30"Lx12"Wx16"H) for $40.00 us. It came with heater, filter, airpump, light, hood, basically everything :) The light didn't work, but our local LPS fixed it for free :D I would say $55 us or 70 Canadian is too much :)

I'm pretty sure you can get a better deal than that for a used setup in Canada.

So far I bought:

30g tank setup (3ft)
- Tank
- Aqua Clear 300
- Two strip lights, each takes two 30w bulbs
- Two glass pieces to cover the top
- Stand
- Syphon that I threw away... ;)
- $120CA

15g long setup
- Tank
- Aqua Clear 200 (old, but works)
- New gravels
- $25CA

10g setup
- Tank
- Aqua Clear Mini
- Glass top
- $25CA

Whenever I see a deal, I grab them whether I need them or not...

Well I'm getting the tank. I checked the stand and its a nice little stand that surrounds the tank as a whole a regent (spelling?) filtration system a brand new heater gravel and some cool ornaments with 10 of the fry. It sucks its incandescent system but its a new canopy and a new tank only 4 months actually used so I guess I'll take it, living in nova scotia not as many people have fish! I'll set it up and hopefully post some pics, thanks for all the advice I know a few of you are probably shaking your heads, haha, but I went to the store today to look at flourescent lighting systems and there were used ones for 35 plus tax, I figure I double it and get everything.

Incandescent lighting runs very hot and gives very little light per Watt, most of the power is returned as heat. In small tanks like that, you will need to be careful the lights don't raise the temperature to much.

Your money, your choice. Sure, there will be people shaking their heads, what did you expect!? :)
