not been in from work long, but ill try and get some pics up tomorrow :good:

still havent managed to get pics of tank yet, done quick water test tonight as old tank sold tonight on ebay so fish are to be moved tomorrow. Reading a lot of the comments seem to back up what I believe in that the plastic support isnt really a big deal.

Also looking at it again, it makes me think if this was really a support strut they would have made it a lot lot thicker and more stable, and to be honest it looks more like its merely a support for the light unit, as the light fits across the middle panel of the lid, but again this rest on a very thin lip, so think this plastic is just to support the bulb section, as otherwise im guessing it would dip over time and get very close to the water

Juwel tanks ARE NOT SAFE WITHOUT BRACES.Why do you think literally all large glass tanks have braces
My rio 400 braces broke, and for the couple of months I left it, it continued to expand, expanding to 1 cm..,>Think I have a pic somewhere.
Look on ebay for some replacement one's, or order in from lfs as I did (it's quite common) and just silicone them on (drain the tank first of course.

do you have anything to back that statement up?

look around on most planted forums people have removed braces from juwel tanks and they will bow...but will not break.

not all large tanks are braced

braceless

I can tell you it was going to burst if I left it (will search for the pic tomorow), but why would I bother lying.Think of the strain on the silicone, its set in the position when the tank was symmetrical, especially if the silicone is old.
That rimless tank is 4 mm thicker than the majority of 4ft tanks, and would appear to be tried and tested.
I got the brace bars for £6 each.

the glass thickness on a rio 300 is about 10mm and its about the same size as the one i linked. silicone is very strong...it has a high tensile strength...braces wont really support the silicone, the side panels of the tank could just as easily pop out

The braces do support it because they prevent the middle going out, and so pulling at the sides. It may have a high tensile strength but overtime it's more and more strain.
Ahh yes it's very high, didn't notice that. The way the glass was bending on my 100gal I wouldn't trust it, and neither for any other tanks designed with braces

but again my question is why make a brace out of a crappy piece of thin plastic and not a metal bar which would not only be stronger but not snap like mine has, and you say about buying a replacement, where??? my brace is built into plstic surround that goes arround the top edge of the whole tank, so by simply emptying the tank, and glueing on a new one, would simply break immediately or quite quickly upon refilling the tank.

Has anyone got a brand new juwel 240, if so did it come with dicumentation mentioning the brace at all and its application

Mine hasn't, and it's pulled the glass back to the correct position, probably say almost 2 years later it still appears ginr.Although I actually have 4 bars now, as one broke, then the other popped out somehow, and I actually bought 3 and re-glued the other.
Should have read the whole thread though, I broused and saw statements 'saying ti will be fine' etc and jsut posted straight away..Didn't think it could have been another model  :look: It's almost half the water volume, but I still wouldn't take the chance.
As I said order a replacement in from a fish shop (it was a common situation along with the broken juwel light bars), or keep an eye out on ebay.
Why do juwel build crappy breakable hoods, and big eye sore filters too  Money I would think

And it kept on getting larger

i had the juwel panorama 100 and accidentally snapped off the brace resulting in the same problem, the person that now has the tank (and has had for over a year and a half) is still using the tank with this problem, its a hit or miss id say, wouldnt risk it personally
