This is my first post so, hello! I bought a black ghost knife fish recently that the guy in the shop told me would be fine in a 60l biorb with guppies, I wont take any advice from fish shop guys again. We all love the big guy so when we found half a guppy in the tank one morning I borrowed a smaller tank to put the guppies in and my dad bought a 240l tank for the ghost, he has since decided he doesn't want the ghost any more. I now have a 260l tank I got when he was still planning on taking the ghost and I have already stocked it with some fish but now ghosty needs a new home again, its a bit confusing, sorry. So in the 260l there is 2 danios, 5 black phantom tetras, 5 guppys, 2 platys and 2 apple snails. My plan is to move the guppies and the apple snails into the biorb and get more phantoms and danios in the 260l (as well as the platys). I was just wondering if anyone had any experience of keeping black ghosts with smaller fish and how it turned out and just if anyone could give me an opinion on this set up as I am getting conflicting information from different websites. I could really pass the tetras and danios onto my dad if need be but I would rather keep them. I have a moon light in the 260l and I am thinking if I feed ghosty when the moonlight comes on then he may leave the rest of the inhabitants alone for the rest of the night, what do yoiu think?

chances are the BGK will eat anything that will fit in its mouth, neons are usually on the menu, but it all depends on your fishes personality.

I think the BGK has already shown you what he'll do with smaller fish when you found the half of a guppy.

I know you are right, will just have to bite the bullet and get him a new home :(

the black ghost knife fish is a very nice fish.
ive had them in the past...but in a much bigger tank.
and with bigger tank mates..nothing small coz as others have said they wont hesitate to eat any small fish.
and a sure favourite of there's is the neon tetra's. or green tetra's
anything small and your taking a big risk.
guppy's wont stand a chance they will be eaten one by one....day by day.
and will be completely gone in no time atall
wether you feed your ghost fish at night or at day...if it wants to kill and eat ur small fish it will do so a it pleases, but ther is no garuntee this will happen as you can never tell what a fish will do in a tank with other fish.
MAJOR NOTE: NEVER PUT A BLACK GHOST KNIFE FISH IN A SMALL BIORB TANK....FAR TOO SMALL!
they can become very stressed and die easily in these tanks..they need a fair bit of room for swimming around.
and are best kept in 2's ive found.
and danios..which danios are they?
giant danios or zebra danios or what?
i had 5 giant danios and they were kept well away from the knife fish...as altho being the biggest of the danios they are still eating size for the black ghost fish.
all said and done...the black ghost knife fish are a lovely fish to keep.

good luck with your fish. :)

BGK fish are meant to be kept single per tank! T he electrical pulses they give off to hunt confuse them if there is more than 1 per tank. They also reach 16" so a large aquarium is needed for 1 yet alone 2! Hope this helps!

i had my bgk with a school of tetras once and after a week there were no tetras left! he's about a foot long, so be careful! and definitely bigger tank!
