Hi everyone :) I'm new here, just looking for some advice.

I have a 60L mature tank, current inhabitants are:
2 x Black Phantom Tetras
1 x Columbian Tetra
2 x Gourami
1 x Bulldog Pleco

I did have 3 Columbians and 5 Phantoms but lost some when I introduced the Gouramis I think I put too many new fish in at once so won't be doing that again.

Should I just up the numbers of these two species or do I have room for any more and if so, what?

One of my Gouramis is a grumpy devil and chases his 'mate' hence my user name, so any new fish would need to be fairly peaceful.

Thanks!

Hi
what type of gouramis are they
The chasing is probably due to the tank being too small, 60L is only about 16USG i.e suitable for approx 16inches worth of fully grown fish

if the gouramis are dwarfs and you are extremely good with water maintenance you should be ok with upping the tetra species.
do you know the current water stats?

Sorry, they are Opaline Gourami.

Used to have Dwarfs but they got the disease thing that they are prone to, so didn't replace them.

I'm dismayed the tank is too small for them - obviously the LFS isn't the best place to gain advice.

Waiting on a water test kit so will have to get back to you on water stats.

So you don't think I have room for any more?

the suggested size for one opaline is 20USG, this is because each fish will pick themselves a territory and chases similar fish out, unfortunately you don't have enough room for two territories and as a result the dominant one is trying to chase the other away, even though it has no where to go.

I would suggest rehoming one of the opalines, (these can get to 6inches and the territorial disputes are only going to get worse)
then you could quite easily up the tetra numbers

and to jp1888, I have actually answered your question and so have 2 or 3 other people, If you hadn't posted pretty much everywhere you could you would have seen that.

Thanks for your help Davo.

I wish I had been advised properly when I bought them. I thought I was doing the right thing buying two. I definitely told the sales person the tank size, but I suppose they don't really care about the fish they're selling.

Any suggestions on where I can advertise the gourami?

Also, the one who is getting chased has changed colour recently. It used to be silvery blue all over but now is quite light at the front and dark blue at the back. I am thinking this must be due to stress :(

yep, the one gourami will likely be showing stress lines if it is having a rough time,

You can advertise in the buy and sell forum on this site or on the aqua classifieds website, (can't quite recall the web address atm tho?) You can also ring around your LFS, tell them your situation and see if they will exchange the fish for you
