I've got a question for everyone who has had snail-eating fish before. I've got this golden apple snail, approaching tennis-ball size, which I hope to keep healthy and intact. I've also got a rainbow shark (about 4" not counting fins) and a bulldog pleco (about 1 & 1/2") in this 20 gal. tank. This arrangement has been working out pretty good. Except for the snails. I've got, all of the sudden, tens of those little ... snails that everyone talks about overrunning your tank. They're not a major problem yet, but I'd like to keep them in check. The obvious problem is that I'd like to keep the apple snail alive, growing, and for the most part left alone (no tentacles nipped, etc.). The two fish in the tank pretty much ignore it (the apple snail shares a cave in the daytime with the rainbow shark; they seem to completely ignore each other - or perhaps enjoy each other's company or something).

Anyway, is there a fish that will eat all of the small snails (those the size of these smiley faces and smaller) and eggs but leave the apple snail alone? I don't think I'd go with a clown loach, b/c I think they could get a little big for the current tank setup.

Anyone have any ideas on this?

Gosh....I don't know!!!

You could try floating about 6 pieces of cucumber on top of the water....whenever I do this about 2 or 3 hours later the cucumber has about 6 snails per piece and you can just pick out the cuc. and toss them!!!! :hyper:

Good Luck though. Clowns are the only snail eaters I've come across....and good ones at that!

I believe there are other snail eating smaller loaches, but I don't rememebr either...

I _think_ one of them is yoyo loaches...
