i have a 45 gallon community tank and want to add something new. probably something that doesn't need a school and is around six inches give or take. andy suggestions?

Siamese algae eater (not the Chinese!) or a plec of some sort?

i was thinking of some sort of plec. and i will NEVER make the mistake of a chinese algae eater again! that was a nightmare. what are siamese algae eaters like?

aren't they like larger ottos?

They are sort of like a giant oto, yes, but they don't mind being on their own, in my experience. They're are no trouble compared to the Chinese 'version'; they stay peaceful!
When I wanted one larger fish for my 45 gallon (it's in my bedroom and has a large shoal of green neons and a dozen marbled hatchetfish) I chose a Royal Whiptail (because I saw it my LFS and fell in love with it!) and she's a lovely fish.

there is a few smaller plecs i like the zebra plec, l106 (hypancistrus zebra) think it grows to around 4 inch

Yeah, they're alovely fish if you can afford one. I've got an l052 in my living room tank; not quite as strikingly marked as H. zebra but a very nice fish all the same (and cheaper!).

well i do have alot of ottos but i do like the idea of the whiptail! and aren't zebra plecs crazy expensive and endangered? but beautiful!

Do Siamese algae eater eat algae of glass or just plants, rocks, wood etc ?

Im looking for one that will eat algae from glass.

Cheers LP

They will, yes; they eat algae all their lives too, unlike the Chinese ones who eat less and less algae the bigger (and uglier!) they get.

Ahh yeh, seen these before good looking fish. What do they recommend group size ?

They are more of a solo-type of fish but of course the more the merrier :p

Cheers.

1 more question other than algea what would you recommend to feed them, algae wafers ?
