Hi all,

There is something very bizarre happening with my male guppy. A couple of weeks ago he had what looked like a parasite or prolapse coming from his anus which I posted about here. It eventually disappeared and it seemed like he was recovering but then on his side, next to his pectoral fin he had what looked like a wound from the other fish nipping at him. Over a couple of days I have noticed he seems to be pooping from this wound?? Is this even possible? I really don’t know what to do about this. I’ve bought aquarium salt to see if that helps him but other than that I’m not sure.

That looks like there is a hole in the side of the fish and its intestine has been damaged and the fish now poops out of that wound. The other fish appear to be picking at it and will make it worse.

Personally I would euthanise the fish but you can put it into a quarantine tank and see if it survives. But it needs to be separated from the other fish to reduce the stress on it.

Oh my god. I've never heard of such thing, this is brand new information to me.

It happens to animals and fish all the time, it even happens to people. They get injured and their intestine gets damaged and their partially digested food comes out of the wound. They usually get an infection and die shortly after it happens but it can happen. These days if it happens to people, they sew you back up and if there's too much damage they stick a colostomy bag on you.

Yeah that’s what I thought it was but couldn’t quite believe it as I’ve never heard of anything like this either. I also think the best option is to euthanise him. He’s always been bullied by the other fish unfortunately so his quality of life isn’t great. I don’t want him to suffer any more.
Thank you for your help.
